Tama’s Basics
Tama City began as Tama Village when the municipal system was enacted. There are various theories as to the origin of the word “Tama,” but the most popular theory is that the Tamba River was born in the Tambayama region of Yamanashi Prefecture, upstream from the Tama River, and the name of the river gave rise to the name of the county, Tama-gun.
